Sir Ian McKellen, CH, KBE, né le 25 mai 1939 à Burnley, est un comédien britannique, actif dans le théâtre classique et contemporain ainsi qu'au cinéma. Il est également connu pour son militantisme en faveur des droits des homosexuels. Parmi ses rôles les plus connus, Ian McKellen interprète Gandalf dans les trilogies Le Seigneur des anneaux et Le Hobbit de Peter Jackson, et Magnéto dans la trilogie cinématographique X-men. McKellen est né à Burnley, dans le Lancashire peu avant la Seconde Guerre mondiale, ce qui a un impact sur son enfance : dans un entretien pour le magazine gay The Advocate, au journaliste qui lui fait remarquer son calme après les attentats du 11 septembre 2001, McKellen répond « mon cher, vous oubliez que j'ai dormi sous un couvercle en métal pendant la bataille d'Angleterre jusqu'à l'âge de quatre ans ».
